If you have a sleep disorder or sleep struggles this summer, Dr. Boland has simple suggestions for better sleep hygiene. Consider these three areas for improving your sleep quality:

1) BEDDING: During the summer, it is important to keep the room temperature cool and bedding light with cotton fabrics or moisture-wicking sheets that allow you to breathe and rest easily. Also, research and test different pillow types (memory foam, hypoallergenic, or feather) to select a pillow style that is right for your sleeping position.

2) ENVIRONMENT: Create a dark and quiet environment for sleep by shutting down electronics, dimming your clock lights, and covering other light sources.  If needed, invest in light-blocking blinds or curtains, purchase a white noise machine, and consider cool paint-color schemes to create a more tranquil sleeping environment.

3) LIFESTYLE: Optimize sleep cycles by keeping a regular sleep schedule.  Also, eat a nutritious diet to promote better sleep quality and exercise daily to expend excess energy. Avoid excessive water right before bedtime, and limit caffeine and alcohol, which could stimulate the body and disturb sleep.

This is just the start for a better night’s rest. Call (813) 981-4403 or click below to schedule a televisit with Dr. Boland to discuss individualized solutions for diagnosing and treating sleep disorders.
